Book Review: "Homer's Odyssey"

Homer's Odyssey is a memoir by Gwen Cooper about adopting an eyeless kitten named Homer. Homer was always joyful and full of energy, befriending any and all humans he met. This was a wonder cat who saved Gwen's life by chasing off a man who had broken in to their apartment late at night, and survived for days trapped alone in an apartment near the World Trade Center after 9/11.

This is a touching story, and I would recommend it to any animal lover.

Book Review: "Dragon Harper"

I just finished a book called Dragon Harper, by Anne McCaffrey and Todd McCaffrey. I chose this book at the library because I have read many books by Anne McCaffrey, and I liked them all. This is one of many of her books that takes place in the fictional land of Pern, a planet ravaged by the mysterious menace known as "Thread", which falls from the sky and destroys anything organic. To protect the people of Pern, dragonriders take to the skies, their dragons' fiery breath destroying the Thread, and this story takes place in a time without Thread, but with only 12 years until it returns. Dragon Harper takes place at Harper Hall, a center of learning. Here, apprentices study to become Harpers, who entertain people, and teach and heal. One of the apprentices, Kindan (the main character), and his friends, Verilan, who is advanced, and Nonala and Kelsa, the only girl apprentices, have a hard time dealing with another apprentice, a bully named Vaxoram. When Vaxoram threatens Kelsa, Kindan challenges him to a deul, which he wins against all odds, somehow ending up friends with Vaxoram. But soon enough, a plague strikes Pern, and Kindan and his friends have to save the day.

I really liked this book. It was completely unpredictable. Near the end, I almost cried, which I hate when I'm reading it, but afterwards I love that, because the author gets me to feel that emotion. It's a great book, I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who likes science fiction and fantasy.
